Did you see it, did you see it, did you see it? Always Dreaming won the 2017 Kentucky Derby and it was AMAZING!

Oh, yeah…Hi!!! Are you having a fantastic week?? How could you not be with races like that? Sorry, Takako tells me that I’m supposed to start at the beginning but it was just all so exciting!

The start!!! The Kentucky Derby ran on Saturday the 6th of May. Did you know that it’s 143 years old?? That’s even older than Pucci! It’s the first race in the American Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and is followed on the 20th of May by the Preakness Stakes and then on the 10th of June by the Belmont Stakes. Run each year at Churchill Downs in Louisville Kentucky, it’s a 1 and ¼ mile race run on a dirt racetrack and up to 150,000- spectators go to the ground to watch! Can you imagine running in front of 150,000- people? That’s just the ones who actually go and watch, imagine how many more watch around the world! How cool would it be to be seen by so many people, well, unless you tripped or had a bad hair day or got distracted by a bee, those things are scary. It wouldn’t be cool to have so many people see you being chased by a bee but maybe that would help you run really really fast? Hmmm.

The race is nicknamed the Race of the Roses because the winner is given a huge garland of roses with more than 400 red roses all sewn together! This year, Always Dreaming won, followed by Lookin at Lee in second and Battle of Midway in third. Always Dreaming was trained by Todd Pletcher and was ridden by the amazing John Velazquez. Velazquez kept Always Dreaming at the head of the pack so he avoided being squished or dragged back by the pack. The track was reallllly squishy this year but that didn’t seem to bother Always Dreaming at all. He didn’t lead but then Esmeralda says that horses who lead first out of the gate almost never win so that was a good thing! He stayed close to the leaders but didn’t tire himself out in the first part of the race. Irish War Cry challenged after Always Dreaming made his move and passed the early leaders but he just went faster and faster!!! He won by a HUGE two and a half lengths and made it look just so easy!

Always Dreaming won USD1,240,000-, Lookin at Lee won USD400,000- and Battle of Midway won USD200,000-. Actually the top five placed horses won prize money. Isn’t that just so nice???

Now that’s he’s won the Derby, Always Dreaming has a chance to win the Triple Crown if he can win the Preakness Stakes (he and Irish War Cry are favourites for that one) and then he has to also win the Belmont Stakes in June but that one is longer and the horses are more tired from the other two races. Still, how cool would it be to win a triple crown??? I think I’d be happy just to win one but three would be sooooo cool! I wonder if they let ponies race? Do you think I could be speedy enough to beat the tall horses? I am super speedy but they are all really tall….I’d better go talk to Dad! Have a great week!
